The From Here to Maternity walk took place on Friday (10 May) and saw each entrants walking around 17 miles from the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital (RSH) to the Princess Royal Hospital (PRH) in Telford. Between them the walkers completed a total distance of around 5,100 miles – the equivalent of travelling from Shrewsbury in Shropshire to the Grand Canyon in Arizona, USA.

Organiser Nick Holding said he was delighted with the response to the walk and its success with the event raising money for the Caring for our Future Appeal launched last year by Councillor Kevin Guy, Mayor of Telford and Wrekin.

The appeal is raising money for a fun, learning environment, and hi-tech facilities at the new Women and Children's Unit which will open at PRH in summer 2014. The appeal is focusing on the creation of a garden room that will link the children's inpatient services to the outside space for children, young people and their families.

Nick said: “Throughout the day there was a fantastic atmosphere and it was a great experience for everybody. People really enjoyed the walk itself and also found the route interesting, as many didn’t know there was a walk along the route and how beautiful the scenery was. That was really pleasing.

“A lot of people got to know people they hadn’t met during the walk, while others had a chance to catch up with former colleagues or people they hadn’t worked with for a while. It created a really good community spirit, which was important to me, as well as raising a fantastic amount for charity.
